Frequently Asked Questions About Certification

Question - Who has to have a Hillsborough County Coaches Certification Card?
Answer - Anyone who is a TBYFL head coach, assistant coach, organization board member or any other position that has direct contact with the players or cheerleaders.

Question - What does it take to get a Hillsborough County Coaches Certification Card?
Answer - You must attend a FREE class which is provided by the county.

Question - Where and when are the classes?
Answer - The classes are held at various locations within Tampa Bay.   The classes are scheduled for the 1st Sunday of EVERY month.  If a holiday falls near the first Sunday of the month, the date may be moved to the next Sunday.  Please check with the Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department at (813) 744-5595 to make sure the class date has not been changed and to find out what locations will be holding the class on that specific date.Questions - I hear that there are different levels of the class. Which one do I take?
Answer - There are 3 different levels, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. If you have never received a certification card, then you always take the Level 1 course. If your card expired more than a year before the class, then you must also take the Level 1 course. If you have a Level 1 card and it expires within 1 year of when you take the class, then you can take a Level 2 class. If you have a Level 2 card which is within a year of expiration, then you can take the Level 3 class. If at anytime you let your certification card expire for more than one year, you must start over with a Level 1 class.

Question - For how long is the card valid?
Answer - All cards (no matter which level) are good for 2 years. In the past the cards were valid for different lengths of time, but starting in 2002 all certification cards are only good for 2 years.

Question - How do I get the physical card?
Answer - Once you have successfully completed the class, the instructor will issue a card with the expiration date. Do not lose this card. You may even want to make copies of it as many organization will require you to provide them with a copy of the card before you are allowed to coach or assist with the teams.
